TCF Canada is the second French test designated by IRCC for Express Entry. It covers the same four abilities as TEF Canada but uses a different scoring system: listening and reading are reported as points, while writing and speaking are reported on a shorter numeric scale assessed by trained raters.
| Section | Time | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| Compréhension orale (listening) | 35 minutes | 39 multiple-choice questions of increasing difficulty, played once. |
| Compréhension écrite (reading) | 60 minutes | 39 multiple-choice questions on everyday, professional and journalistic documents. |
| Expression écrite (writing) | 60 minutes | 3 tasks of increasing length and complexity, from a short message to a structured comparison of two viewpoints. |
| Expression orale (speaking) | 12 minutes | 3 tasks with an examiner: a guided interview, an interaction to obtain information, and a monologue expressing a point of view. |
How TCF Canada Scores Convert to CLB
Listening and reading are reported from 100 to 699 points. Writing and speaking are reported from 0 to 20. Express Entry converts all four to the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC), the French counterpart of the CLB scale.
| NCLC / CLB level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 549-699 | 549-699 | 16-20 | 16-20 |
| 9 | 523-548 | 524-548 | 14-15 | 14-15 |
| 8 | 503-522 | 499-523 | 12-13 | 12-13 |
| 7 | 458-502 | 453-498 | 10-11 | 10-11 |
| 6 | 398-457 | 406-452 | 7-9 | 7-9 |
| 5 | 369-397 | 375-405 | 6 | 6 |
| 4 | 331-368 | 342-374 | 4-5 | 4-5 |
What to Know Before You Book
- Only TCF Canada is accepted for Express Entry. The general TCF, TCF ANF and TCF Québec versions serve other purposes and are not accepted for permanent residence.
- Writing and speaking use a compressed 0 to 20 scale, so a single point can move you a whole NCLC level. Precision in those two sections matters more than in listening or reading.
- Results are generally issued within four to six weeks of the test date.
Conversion tables and eligibility rules are set by the Government of Canada and can change. Confirm the current tables on the official IRCC website before you book or submit.
