TEF Canada is a French proficiency test designed for Canadian immigration and citizenship. Candidates sit four separate modules, and Express Entry requires all four. A strong TEF Canada result can attract second-language points and, at NCLC 7 or above in every ability, up to 50 additional CRS points.
| Section | Time | What it contains |
|---|---|---|
| Compréhension orale (listening) | About 40 minutes | 60 questions covering announcements, conversations, interviews and radio-style extracts. |
| Compréhension écrite (reading) | 60 minutes | 50 questions on notices, correspondence, articles and longer documents. |
| Expression écrite (writing) | 60 minutes | 2 tasks: completing a news item or narrative, and expressing and defending an opinion. |
| Expression orale (speaking) | 15 minutes | 2 tasks with an examiner: obtaining information from an advertisement, and persuading someone to act. |
How TEF Canada Scores Convert to CLB
Each TEF Canada module is reported as a raw score with an attached level. Express Entry converts those scores to the Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens (NCLC), which is the French equivalent of the CLB scale.
| NCLC / CLB level | Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 316-360 | 263-300 | 393-450 | 393-450 |
| 9 | 298-315 | 248-262 | 371-392 | 371-392 |
| 8 | 280-297 | 233-247 | 349-370 | 349-370 |
| 7 | 249-279 | 207-232 | 310-348 | 310-348 |
| 6 | 217-248 | 181-206 | 271-309 | 271-309 |
| 5 | 181-216 | 151-180 | 226-270 | 226-270 |
| 4 | 145-180 | 121-150 | 181-225 | 181-225 |
What to Know Before You Book
- Only TEF Canada is accepted for Express Entry. Other TEF versions such as TEF, TEFAQ or TEF études are designed for other purposes and are not accepted for permanent residence.
- NCLC 7 in all four abilities is the threshold for the French-language additional points, which is why candidates target that level specifically rather than a general pass.
- Results are generally issued within about four weeks, so book well ahead of any profile deadline.
Conversion tables and eligibility rules are set by the Government of Canada and can change. Confirm the current tables on the official IRCC website before you book or submit.
